Abstract

This study examines the teaching and learning of Kināyah in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim by utilising Minecraft Education as an instructional tool. Guided by the Design and Development Research (DDR) model, this paper reports the findings from Phase 1: Needs Analysis. The objectives of this phase are to: (i) identify students’ learning practices related to al-Kināyah and al-Ḥadīth al-Syarīf, (ii) determine the challenges they face in understanding al-Kināyah, (iii) assess their readiness and perceptions toward the use of gamification specifically Minecraft Education and (iv) identify the multimedia and instructional elements required for designing a Minecraft-based learning module. Data were collected from 42 undergraduate students across various Islamic Studies programmes at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) using a validated questionnaire. The findings show that students encounter multiple difficulties, including limited vocabulary, insufficient learning resources, and reliance on traditional teaching methods. However, the results also demonstrate strong acceptance and positive attitudes toward gamification, with students expressing that Minecraft Education could improve engagement, motivation, and comprehension. This study provides empirical evidence on learner needs for developing a Minecraft-based educational module on al-Kināyah, offering a structured framework for integrating game-based learning into Islamic Studies and Arabic rhetorical instruction.
