ASSESSING FOOD WASTE BEHAVIOUR AMONG THE COMMUNITY OF PULAU TUBA, LANGKAWI

It has been acknowledged that tourist destinations worldwide face significant issues related to food waste, which comes most from the hospitality sector. Meanwhile, Pulau Tuba, a small island located off the west coast of Langkawi, is a relatively lesser-known destination renowned for its natural beauty and might face a similar issue when the industrial players start to come in. Thus, this study aims to investigate the food waste behaviour of its community by applying the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) prior to any future developments to accommodate the needs of the tourism industry in Pulau Tuba. A self-administered questionnaire was conveniently distributed to respondents at four identified locations in Pulau Tuba. The data were then analysed using SPSS (ver. 26) software. The findings reveal no significant correlation between subjective norms and perceived behavioural control towards food waste behaviour. On the other hand, Pearson correlation analysis shows that attitude has a significant positive correlation towards food waste behaviour. Consequently, attitude is shown to be the only predictor that influences food waste behaviour. The findings of this study can benefit the local authority in monitoring and conducting food waste awareness among the Pulau Tuba community. In addition, the outcome of the study can help the authorities and the community prepares the necessary measures to receive the influx of tourists whilst ensuring the sustainability of Pulau Tuba as one of Malaysia’s tourist attractions.
