Abstract

The history and heritage of the Hajj during the sea voyage era constitute a long-standing national treasure that is highly valuable to society. Unfortunately, this history and heritage are gradually disappearing with the passing of historical actors who served as eyewitnesses to the events that took place. This study aims to highlight the narratives and memories of those who were directly and indirectly involved in Hajj affairs, which are not found in official documents. This study also examines the opportunities and challenges encountered in tracing the history and heritage of the Hajj during the sea voyage era. This study employs an oral history approach through semi-structured interviews. The selected respondents consist of individuals who were directly and indirectly involved in the implementation of the Hajj during the sea voyage era. The findings indicate that oral testimonies provided by those directly and indirectly involved in the performance of the Hajj during the sea voyage era constitute an important source of knowledge about the past that is not recorded in official documents. They also serve as an important means of understanding the values, culture, and thinking of society in a different historical period.
