This article examines the transcript of the Baling Talks held from 28 to 29 December 1955, following the efforts of the Government of the Federation of Malaya to end the Emergency. An amnesty for communist terrorists was announced on 8 September 1955, shortly after the victory of the Alliance Party in the 1955 General Election. The government’s initiative led to a meeting between communist representatives, namely Chin Peng, Chen Tien and Rashid Maidin, and Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tan Cheng Lock and David Marshall. Baling English School became the venue for the meeting between representatives of the government and the Malayan Communist Party (MCP). This article adopts a historical approach, drawing on interviews with selected informants, records from the National Archives of Malaysia, newspapers and other secondary documents. The author’s analysis found that there were 308 question-and-answer exchanges involving communication between representatives of the government and the MCP throughout the two-day negotiation period. Although the Baling Talks did not succeed in bringing about the dissolution of the MCP, as intended by Tunku Abdul Rahman, they remain an important and meaningful moment in the nation’s history. The credibility and firmness of Tunku Abdul Rahman, who refused to compromise with the MCP representatives, demonstrated the admirable qualities of a distinguished statesman.
